A b o u t  t h e  A r t i s t . . .

I was born at a farm in Fanling, New Territories in Hong Kong. Since my boyhood, I have loved nature. I love truth, virtue, beauty and a simply life. I love painting because it helps to carry me back to my boyhood. How I wish to remain a boy forever! In my painting I like two colours in particular: red and green, which represent the nature of the Chinese people and culture. Red represents authoritarianism and green freedom. They are in sharp contrast and yet harmonious with each other. People loved freedom when they were young, but when they have grown up, they become more reserved.

I have painted many pictures on trees because I am as fond of nature as Tao Yian-ming(陶淵明), as romantic as Li Bai(李白), as elegant as Huanghui(王維) , as melancholic as Li Xiang-yin(李商隱) and as sincere as So Xi(蘇軾). They were all scholars who loved nature throughout the four seasons of the year. Perhaps most of us have had a forest in our minds, away from things of the materialistic world. In the imaginary forest, we can enjoy all the beauty of nature, with its birds and flowers. Nature is beautiful and peaceful. In nature we can study the ancient Chinese civilization with the wisdom accumulated over the last 5,000 years. Our noble aim is a utopian world with love, harmony and fraternity among people. It is like the Chinese character(靜) which consists of two parts: meaning green(青) and meaning competition(爭) for perfection.

The treasure we have inherited from the Chinese civilization is the Confucian philosophy on benevolence and righteousness and the Taoist theory of the unattainable 'Way? With Chinese philosophy, we can enjoy things in nature throughout the year. My paintings on 'Dragon' 'The Great Emperor' 'Chariot' 'Living in Silence' and 'Yesterday'are all imaginary with inspiration for the pursuit of perfection. I feel I have now attained my aim of life, which I have sought day and night for years. May my pursuit of perfection bring me more wisdom to perpetuate the invaluable Chinese culture.
